A ROBIN EGG’S GLAZE ‘DOUBLE-GOURD’ BOTTLE VASE
QIANLONG AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)

Well potted of double section rising from a square base, the cuboid lower globe transform at the waist to a spherical upper globe, covered in a finely-mottled glaze of rich turquoise of robin egg’s tone continuing slightly over the interior of the mouth rim and pooling to a deeper turquoise in the carved recesses to accentuate the design. The six character reign mark inscribed on the base.

The present lot exhibits a round upper section resting on a square lower section, which is connotative of the traditional Chinese conception of the universe as tian yuan di feng, translating to ‘the sky is round while the land is square.’ Compare a similar vase exhibiting a similar decorative motif from the Huaihaitang Collection, illustrated in Ethereal elegance, porcelain vases of the Imperial Qing, The Huaihaitang Collection, pl.103, p.302.
