Catalogue Note:
A burl is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is usually found on the trunk, at the base of the tree, and sometimes underground in the form of a rounded outgrowth. Some have patterns of grapes, some of landscape, all with high aesthetic values. Because of its rarity, burlwood is hardly carved to retain its natural shape, and is deemed as the best material for scholar objects and traditional furniture.
