Yang Pei-Chen

Taiwanese 1970

Born in 1970 in Taipei, Taiwan, and graduating from Taipei University of the Arts, Department of Fine Arts in 1999, Yang Pei-Chen lived in Spain from 1999 to 2003 but currently lives, teaches, and works in Taipei. His works are all wood-based carvings, and though deceptively simple, they carry personal memories and stories belonging to the artist. He utilizes unparalleled skill and technique to create extremely realistic wood sculptures of everyday objects. Under his craftsmanship, solid wood can appear to have the softness of fabric or leather, and even display the transparency and thinness of paper – one has to touch the works themselves to believe they are made of wood. Yang Pei-Chen believes that the best thing about realism is that it is extremely relatable, because anyone that has seen his work has expressed awe and curiosity, which further motivates him to create. Today creation is not only about discovering inspiration and creativity, but also a form of self-discipline.
